Ukrainian Security Service Detains Russian Agent Over 1,000 Starlink Activations
Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) arrested a man in the city of Dnipro accused of illegally activating more than 1,000 Starlink satellite terminals for Russian forces. The suspect, a native of the Russian‑occupied Luhansk region, was recruited by Russian intelligence via Telegram and received credentials that allowed him to register a terminal in his own name. He then expanded the scheme, using personal data of proxy individuals to register additional terminals at postal offices across the country.
The SBU blocked all of the illegally registered terminals, seizing a smartphone that contained communications with the Russian handlers. The detainee has been placed under suspicion under Article 111‑2 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code, which carries a possible sentence of up to 12 years for aiding a foreign state. SBU officials noted that this arrest follows earlier operations that dismantled similar networks, including the detention of two men in Kyiv who had activated more than 70 terminals and earlier cases involving dozens of devices. Starlink, the high‑speed satellite internet service operated by SpaceX, has become a critical communications tool for Ukrainian forces on the front line.
