Ukraine secures monthly Patriot missile supply and CPC oil protection agreement
Ukraine has reached an agreement with the United States for the monthly delivery of Patriot interceptor missiles to bolster its air defenses. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that while this is a significant step, the quantities will remain insufficient to fully protect Ukrainian airspace, particularly as supplies are expected to decrease in 2026. Zelenskyy has also explored alternatives, such as participating in the European Freyja missile defense system development and proposing licensed production of Patriot missiles locally or with European partners.
In a separate strategic development, Ukraine has committed to refrain from attacking non-Russian oil tankers and the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) infrastructure in the Black Sea. This agreement, facilitated by U.S. mediation, aims to secure global energy supplies, as the CPC terminal near Novorossiysk is a vital artery for Kazakhstan's oil exports, accounting for approximately 2% of global crude supply. The agreement specifically protects tankers that are not under Ukrainian sanctions, do not carry Russian cargo, and are not owned by Russian entities.
Additionally, President Zelenskyy warned of potential Russian tactics, including a large-scale, secret mobilization through hidden contracts and border closures. He also cautioned that Vladimir Putin might attempt to manipulate agreements made with the United States to gain further territorial concessions.
