Germany to supply Ukraine with Patriot interceptors from military stocks
Germany has announced an urgent military aid package for Ukraine to bolster its air defenses ahead of the winter season. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius confirmed that Germany will transfer PAC-2 interceptor missiles directly from Bundeswehr stocks to help protect Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure from anticipated Russian aerial attacks.
In addition to the Patriot interceptors, Germany is increasing deliveries of air-to-air missiles and will finance tens of thousands of rounds of long-range artillery ammunition in cooperation with the United Kingdom. Ukraine is also set to order several thousand additional Iris-T guided missiles, which will be funded through the EU-Ukraine Defense Loan.
To facilitate the procurement of US-made Patriot components, the European Commission has approved an exemption from standard rules, allowing Ukraine to use the Ukraine Support Loan for this purpose. This move follows a €3.2 billion tranche intended to address the acute shortage of interceptors. The United Kingdom has also committed £100 million to the NATO PURL initiative to support these air defense efforts.
