Ukraine seeks urgent missile defense and drone technology solutions

Ukraine is facing escalating challenges in defending against Russian ballistic missile attacks, leading to urgent requests for Patriot missile systems. To address immediate shortages, Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara has proposed a swap arrangement where allies lend current interceptor stocks in exchange for future replenishment once long-term contracts are fulfilled.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed concern over declining ammunition supplies, noting a projected drop in deliveries from 675 units in 2023 to an estimated 264 by 2026. While Zelensky believes European nations hold sufficient PAC-2 and PAC-3 missiles to meet winter requirements, the exact availability remains uncertain.

In response to the high cost of conventional air defense, Ukraine has also focused on domestic drone development. Through the Come Back Alive Foundation’s ‘Dronefall’ project, the country has worked to develop practical solutions to combat modern aerial threats. Data indicates that through May 2026, more than 39,000 hostile drones have been intercepted using these methods.
