Ukraine Sets Record $98 B Defense Budget for 2026

Ukraine's parliament approved amendments to the 2026 state budget that raise defence and security spending to a record UAH 4.4 trillion (about $97.6 billion). The increase adds UAH 1.56 trillion ($34.6 billion) to the previous allocation.

Around UAH 2.3 trillion ($51 billion) will be earmarked for the purchase of weapons and military equipment, while more than UAH 1.45 trillion ($32 billion) will fund financial support for military personnel. An additional UAH 40 billion ($887 million) is designated for regional resilience projects, such as protecting critical infrastructure and ensuring heat, water and electricity supplies.

The budget boost is largely enabled by European Union assistance, including a €90 billion support package of which €45 billion is to be received this year. Of that, €31.8 billion is allocated to defence capabilities and €13.2 billion for broader budgetary support. The legislation also accompanies fiscal reforms aimed at widening the tax base to sustain Ukraine’s war‑economy.

Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko praised the parliamentary support, stating the extra resources will enhance the Defence Forces’ ability to protect civilians amid ongoing Russian attacks.
