Algeria orphanage fire kills 11, injures 19

A fire broke out in the early hours of 16 July 2026 at the Childhood Relief Institution (also referred to as the Foundation of Assisted Childhood) in Mohammadia, a suburb east of Algiers. The provisional death toll is 11 people, with 19 others injured – ten suffering burns of varying severity, two with respiratory distress, and seven experiencing shock. Five residents with special needs were evacuated to a safe location.

The cause of the blaze remains unknown. Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb visited the Zeralda burn‑treatment centre and the Mustapha Pacha University Hospital to check on the victims, while President Abdelmadjid Tebboune expressed condolences. Authorities have launched an investigation and continue firefighting and rescue operations amid a severe heat wave that has sparked hundreds of fires across Algeria.
