Ukraine strikes Russian Tu-95MS bomber at Engels-2 airbase
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukrainian forces, specifically the SBU Alpha unit, successfully struck a Russian Tu-95MS strategic bomber at the Engels-2 airbase in the Saratov region. Satellite imagery analyzed by AviVector suggests the aircraft sustained severe structural damage, including a partially or completely detached right wing, which may render the irreplaceable bomber unrepairable.
In addition to the airbase strike, Ukrainian forces reported hitting an oil refinery in the Yaroslavl region, located approximately 1,000 kilometers from the front line. These operations are part of a broader campaign to degrade Russia's long-range strike capabilities, as the Tu-95MS is a primary platform used for launching Kh-101 cruise missiles against Ukrainian territory.
Concurrently, Russia launched new waves of drone and missile attacks against Ukraine, resulting in at least one death near Kyiv and damage to residential buildings and warehouses. The strike on the Engels-2 base, which houses both Tu-95MS and Tu-160 bombers, represents a significant hit to Russia's strategic aviation fleet.
