Ukraine strikes Russia's Progress Rocket Space Center in Samara

Ukrainian forces have struck the Progress Rocket Space Center in Samara, Russia, using FP-5 ‘Flamingo’ cruise missiles, according to President Zelenskyy. The facility is a critical site for the assembly of Soyuz-2 rockets, which serve both military and civilian purposes, including crewed missions to the International Space Station and the deployment of military satellites.

While the full extent of the damage is still being assessed via satellite imagery, preliminary reports suggest the strike may have hit the final assembly area or a clean room housing sensitive avionics. The Progress center is also responsible for producing the newer Soyuz-5 rockets.

This strike comes at a time when Russia was already reportedly facing production lags and shortages of Soyuz rockets. Any sustained disruption to the center’s integration capacity or avionics production could impact Russia’s military launch schedules and its crew rotation capabilities for the International Space Station.
