Ukraine to begin Rafale fighter jet training in France

Ukrainian pilots are expected to begin training on French Rafale fighter jets in France in the near future, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The announcement followed a telephone conversation between Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron regarding Ukraine’s defense requirements.

The training is part of a long-term defense agreement aimed at modernizing Ukraine’s air force. While the broader plan involves the potential acquisition of up to 100 aircraft over the next decade, an initial order has been established for 16 Rafales and their associated armaments. Four of these aircraft are slated for transfer to Ukraine once pilots and mechanics have completed their training.

The defense cooperation extends beyond aircraft to include the licensed domestic production of French munitions in Ukraine, such as AASM Hammer glide bombs and SCALP cruise missiles. Additionally, the two nations are coordinating on air-defense systems, including the SAMP/T NG. While the training marks a significant step for Ukrainian combat aviation, the long-term financing for the full 100-plane fleet remains a subject of ongoing discussion.
