Ukraine to increase Dniester River water flow by 20%

Ukraine has agreed to increase the water flow discharged from the Novodnistrovsk hydroelectric complex by approximately 20% to address the difficult hydrological situation on the Dniester River. The agreement was reached following discussions between Moldovan Prime Minister Vasile Tofan and Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Denis Shmyhal.

Officials noted that while the increase provides relief, the situation on the upper course of the river remains complicated. The decision was facilitated by falling temperatures and recent precipitation in the Carpathian Mountains, which reduced evaporation and aided water levels. The measure is critical for Moldovan localities that depend on the river for water supply.

Beyond hydrological concerns, the leaders discussed energy security, including cooperation regarding natural gas and electricity supplies. Prime Minister Tofan is scheduled to visit Kyiv at the end of October to continue these bilateral discussions. Meanwhile, some local officials have expressed concerns that the increase does not fully resolve long-standing issues regarding river pollution and strategic water management.
