Ukraine to receive Swedish Gripen fighter jets in two waves

Ukraine is preparing for the arrival of Swedish Gripen fighter jets to bolster its air defense and counter Russian aircraft deploying glide bombs. The deployment will occur in two distinct phases involving different aircraft models and acquisition methods.

The first wave consists of 16 Gripen C/D models, which are expected to arrive as military aid by the beginning of 2027. The second phase involves a separate purchase agreement for 16 more advanced Gripen E aircraft, scheduled to enter service in early 2029. This purchase, signed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and representatives from both nations, includes necessary equipment and ongoing maintenance, with financing facilitated through European loans supported by the United Kingdom.

Training for Ukrainian pilots and technical personnel is currently underway with the assistance of partner nations. Ukrainian Defense Minister Evgeniy Khmara noted that targeting Russian aircraft that launch glide bombs remains a high priority for the air force.
