Ukraine: U.S. urges European aid increase as war persists

The United States has signaled that the war in Ukraine is expected to become a protracted conflict, prompting calls for European nations to increase military support. During a virtual ministerial meeting, U.S. Under Secretary of State Elbridge Colby stated that Europe must prepare for a long-term struggle as Russia rebuilds its military and defense industrial capacities. While European nations have provided approximately 90 billion euros in military aid, total support to Ukraine has exceeded 220 billion euros. The Pentagon emphasized that Europe must not only sustain immediate battlefield needs but also accelerate its own rearmament and industrialization.

Separately, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has conditioned Hungary's support for further European Union accession clusters for Ukraine on Kyiv taking concrete steps to protect the rights of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia. Magyar noted that a political agreement reached in June regarding the educational, cultural, linguistic, and administrative rights of Hungarians has not yet been implemented by the Ukrainian government. He argued that the EU accession process should be performance-based, citing the slow progress of other candidate countries like Serbia to ensure fairness.
