Ukraine war evolves into war of attrition amid shifting geopolitical dynamics

The conflict in Ukraine has evolved into a protracted war of attrition four and a half years after the full-scale Russian invasion. While Western nations and NATO initially formed a unified front, the political landscape is shifting following the re-election of Donald Trump in the United States. Although no formal withdrawal from NATO has been announced, the U.S. administration has signaled a reduction in military presence and engagement in Europe, prompting European NATO members to increase their own involvement to fill the gap.

Ukraine has demonstrated growing battlefield strength through advancements in domestic drone and missile technology, supported by American satellite data. In response, the Kremlin has utilized hybrid warfare tactics to disrupt European supply chains and influence elections. Recent incidents include an explosion at a KNDS-owned weapons factory in Italy and a drone attack attempt on an Antonov transport aircraft in Leipzig, Germany.

From a logistical perspective, maintaining a high-intensity combat force of approximately 800,000 personnel requires massive daily resources. Estimates suggest a need for up to 179,600 tons of supplies daily, including 65,000 to 95,000 tons of fuel and 40,000 to 80,000 tons of ammunition, highlighting an extreme dependence on railway infrastructure and complex supply chains.
