Ukraine war sees surge in civilian deaths and Russian military losses
Between May and July 2023, the Conflict Intelligence Team recorded 1,462 civilian deaths and 10,666 injuries in the Ukraine war, with about 70 % of those casualties occurring in areas under Ukrainian control. The rise in civilian harm follows intensified Russian drone and missile attacks, including a recent incident where a drone struck the Russian Black Sea resort of Gelendzhik, and Ukrainian strikes on Russian e‑commerce warehouses and oil facilities that have also caused civilian casualties. Ukrainian authorities have ordered the evacuation of several hundred families from Kramatorsk and nearby settlements because of the heightened risk of further Russian assaults.
The Ukrainian General Staff reports that Russian military losses have reached 1,455,420 personnel killed, wounded or missing since the invasion began in February 2022, with 1,210 losses recorded in the latest 24‑hour period. Equipment losses include more than 12,000 tanks, 25,000 armored vehicles, tens of thousands of artillery pieces and drones, and dozens of aircraft and ships. The Center for Strategic and International Studies estimates that Russian losses are roughly two to two‑and‑a‑half times higher than Ukrainian losses, while President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed.
