Ukraine war shifts European security focus and aid priorities

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has intensified the strategic divide between Western and Eastern Europe. Russian military operations targeting Ukrainian infrastructure, industry, and logistics aim to increase the economic and logistical burden on Western supporters.

To sustain the Ukrainian military, international partners have committed significant funding. For 2026, $38 billion in military aid is projected, with major contributors including Germany (€11.5 billion), Norway ($7 billion), Sweden (€3.7 billion), the United Kingdom (£3 billion), Denmark ($2 billion), Spain ($1.2 billion), and Belgium (€1 billion). Since 2022, the United States has been the largest bilateral donor, providing nearly $115.4 billion, while the European Union has allocated over €84.4 billion.

The war has also shifted the continent's security focus. While Western Europe previously relied on economic interdependence to maintain peace, Eastern European nations—including Poland, the Baltic states, Romania, Moldova, Georgia, and Armenia—emphasize that European security can no longer be managed solely from traditional power centers like Paris, Berlin, or Brussels.
