Black Sea food security threatened by Russian blockade, warns Ukraine

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha has warned that the Black Sea could become a second Strait of Hormuz regarding global food security. He stated that Russia is using food as a weapon by blockading Ukrainian agricultural exports, a strategy intended to cause food shortages in African nations and trigger migration waves toward Europe.

Sybiha noted that during the 2022 blockade, global food prices surged by 25 percent, and a similar spike is feared again. He highlighted that India and Egypt have joined international efforts to address these maritime security issues. Meanwhile, reports indicate Russian forces have conducted strikes on Ukrainian industrial, storage, and energy infrastructure, including a cargo vessel in the Black Sea allegedly carrying military supplies.

In Bulgaria, former security officials have warned that the escalation of Russian hybrid attacks and maritime instability poses economic risks, including rising insurance costs for cargo ships and potential disruptions to Black Sea trade routes.
