Ukraine's Foreign Minister Sybiha Meets Poland's Sikorski to Defuse UPA Naming Dispute

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha met Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski in Warsaw on 3 July. The two officials discussed a package of “anti‑crisis” measures aimed at stabilising bilateral relations after tensions rose over Ukraine’s decision to name a military unit “Heroes of the UPA" – a move Poland criticised as disrespectful to Polish wartime victims.

Sybiha said the proposal includes renewed consultations between the foreign ministries, a joint meeting of World War II historians who participated in the Polish‑Ukrainian Congress of Historians, and dialogue involving religious leaders from both sides. He also noted that Ukraine has resumed issuing permits for exhumation work and will continue to allow such searches.

Both ministers reaffirmed cooperation against Russia, discussed military‑technical collaboration, upcoming NATO summit preparations, and plans to speed up customs procedures, improve border infrastructure and expand business ties. Poland reiterated its support for Ukraine’s defence capabilities, while urging that historical disputes not be exploited by Moscow.
