Ukraine's Odesa ports disruption threatens global grain supply

Hapag-Lloyd announced the temporary suspension of feeder connections to three Ukrainian Black Sea ports—Chornomorsk, Odesa and Pivdennyi—citing a worsening security situation in the Odesa region. The carrier is evaluating the Romanian town of Reni as an alternative discharge point and may also redirect cargo to ports in Romania or Poland, with any additional costs to be borne by cargo interests.

Ukraine warned that a prolonged shutdown of the Odesa ports could push global wheat prices up by as much as 25% and exacerbate food shortages, as the region handles about 30% of the world’s wheat exports. Alternative routes such as Danube river ports, rail and road can only replace a fraction of the maritime capacity, raising concerns for North Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia that rely heavily on Ukrainian grain during the harvest season.
