Ukraine's stance on Kosovo recognition sparks tension in Prishtina

Tensions have risen in Kosovo following comments by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy regarding his country’s stance on Kosovo’s statehood. Zelenskyy indicated that the issue of recognizing Kosovo would be revisited once the war with Russia concludes, maintaining Ukraine's current position of non-recognition.

In response to these remarks, a ‘Freedom for Ukraine’ flag was removed from the Hotel Grand in central Prishtina. The removal was reportedly motivated by Kosovo’s strong stance against Russian aggression and its ongoing support for Ukraine.

The Embassy of Ukraine in Albania clarified that Zelenskyy’s remarks during a visit to Belgrade were not a new policy shift, but rather a response to a journalist's question. The Embassy emphasized that Ukraine’s consistent position should not be interpreted as a lack of appreciation for Kosovo’s solidarity, its alignment with democratic nations in sanctioning Russia, or its support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
