Sweden secures five medals at European Athletics Championships

Sweden concluded a strong performance at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, securing five medals and 70 championship points. While the team narrowly missed its goal of surpassing the 2006 record of six medals, head coach Kajsa Bergqvist described it as one of the best championships in the nation's history, noting significant depth with ten athletes finishing in the top four.

Key highlights included Armand Duplantis winning his fourth consecutive European pole vault title with a championship record of 6.15 metres. Andreas Almgren secured gold in the 10,000 metres with a new championship record of 27:23.44. Other medalists included Samuel Pihlström, who earned silver in the 1,500 metres after an impressive final sprint, Wictor Petersson with bronze in shot put, and Vanessa Kamga with bronze in discus.

Despite the success, some athletes faced scrutiny or missed opportunities. Suldan Hassan finished fourth in the marathon, just three seconds off the bronze medal. Additionally, journalist Robert Perlskog criticized Andreas Almgren for choosing not to compete in the 5,000 metres, suggesting the athlete could have secured another medal had he participated.
