German police detain Ukrainian suspect in espionage case targeting Bavarian defense company
German authorities arrested a 33‑year‑old Ukrainian citizen in Thuringia on suspicion of spying for a foreign intelligence service. Prosecutors say he photographed a Bavarian defence contractor’s facilities in June 2026 and passed the images to his handler, potentially preparing for sabotage. He has been described as a “low‑level agent” and is being held in a Bavarian detention centre while the case is examined by Germany’s new national centre for hybrid threats.
The arrest follows a series of similar incidents across Europe, including earlier accusations of Ukrainian involvement in Russian‑led plots to deliver explosives. German officials have not identified the foreign state involved, but stress the seriousness of hybrid‑threat operations aimed at destabilising Western security infrastructure.
