German police detain Ukrainian suspect in espionage case targeting Bavarian defense company

German authorities arrested a 33‑year‑old Ukrainian citizen in Thuringia on suspicion of spying for a foreign intelligence service. Prosecutors say he photographed a Bavarian defence contractor’s facilities in June 2026 and passed the images to his handler, potentially preparing for sabotage. He has been described as a “low‑level agent” and is being held in a Bavarian detention centre while the case is examined by Germany’s new national centre for hybrid threats.

The arrest follows a series of similar incidents across Europe, including earlier accusations of Ukrainian involvement in Russian‑led plots to deliver explosives.
