Ukrainian Conti ransomware member sentenced to four years in prison

Oleksii Oleksiyovych Lytvynenko, a 44-year-old Ukrainian national, has been sentenced to four years in prison for his role in the Conti ransomware group. Lytvynenko pleaded guilty in June to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, admitting to joining the cybercrime group in September 2021.

As both a developer and an intruder, Lytvynenko helped create malicious tools and held stolen data from at least 12 victims, including eight organizations based in the United States. Prosecutors noted that his actions contributed to the group's ability to extort and threaten various entities, including critical infrastructure.

The Conti group, which disbanded in 2022 following disagreements related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, is estimated to have attacked over 1,000 organizations across 32 countries and extorted more than $150 million. Lytvynenko was arrested in Ireland in July 2023 and subsequently extradited to the United States.
