Operation Veles Khartiia Corps Kupiansk underground warfare gas pipeline infiltration

The 2nd Khartiia Corps of the Ukrainian National Guard has reported the execution of Operation Veles, a large-scale underground counteroffensive near Kupiansk in the Kharkiv region. Ukrainian troops traveled over 15 kilometers (approximately 9 miles) through the Shebelinka–Ostrozhnsk gas pipeline infrastructure to emerge behind Russian positions.

The operation utilized the abandoned Soviet-era pipeline, which runs under the Oskil River, to bypass Russian defenses. According to Brigadier General Ihor Obolenskyi, commander of the Khartiia Corps, Ukrainian forces studied Russian tactics of using underground routes for troop movement and successfully turned the infrastructure into a tactical advantage. The mission combined underground infiltration with simultaneous surface assaults and synchronized drone strikes.

Ukrainian officials claim the operation resulted in more than 30 Russian soldiers being captured and over 100 Russian casualties. The mission aimed to disrupt Russian ability to use the pipelines for covert troop transfers toward the western bank of the Oskil River. These casualty figures have not been independently verified.
