Ukrainian grower maintains collection of 400 tomato varieties

Natalia Boyarchuk, a grower in the Volyn region of western Ukraine, has spent over 15 years cultivating a collection of approximately 400 tomato varieties. Known as the ‘Tomato Queen’ in Hirka Polonka, Boyarchuk selects specific varieties each season to test for color, shape, size, flavor, and resilience to local environmental conditions.

The diverse collection includes red, pink, yellow, burgundy, and nearly black tomatoes in various shapes, such as round, elongated, and pepper-like. Sizes vary significantly, with a recorded harvest reaching 680 grams. To support plant development, Boyarchuk utilizes vermicompost made from California red worms to enhance soil structure and nutrient levels.

Boyarchuk’s process focuses on preserving genetic and varietal diversity. She manages the collection by planting selected portions, trialing new additions, and sourcing seeds through personal crops, purchases, and exchanges with other collectors. Some varieties are specifically chosen for their ability to extend the harvest season; these are picked green before the first frost and ripened slowly for consumption through January.
