Indonesia investigates reports of citizens joining Russian military
The Ukrainian Foreign Intelligence Service (FISU) has released data alleging that at least eight Indonesian citizens have been recruited into the Russian military to fight in the war against Ukraine. FISU claims to possess documents, including communications regarding visas, that identify the individuals. The recruits, aged between 29 and 47, were reportedly enticed by promises of high salaries, social benefits, and expedited Russian citizenship.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently verifying these reports through its diplomatic missions and in coordination with relevant government agencies. Officials stated that if the involvement is confirmed, it would be considered an individual decision and does not reflect the official policy or stance of the Indonesian government.
Authorities are also investigating whether these individuals were victims of fraud, exploitation, or deceptive job offers that did not reflect the true nature of the work. The Ministry warned that participating in a foreign military without presidential approval can lead to the loss of Indonesian citizenship under national law.
