US and Russia agree on diesel supply deal amid Ukraine conflict

The United States and Russia have reached an agreement to supply Russian diesel to American and global markets, aimed at lowering fuel prices. To facilitate this, the US Treasury Department issued a general license allowing the import of Russian diesel through April 7, 2027. The supply plan includes an immediate delivery of over 300,000 tons, followed by 500,000 tons in November, and subsequent shipments of 1 million tons, with potential totals exceeding 4.8 million tons.

This decision has sparked intense political friction. President Donald Trump criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, suggesting Ukraine needs a new leader capable of reaching a peace deal. Trump also blamed Zelenskyy's strikes on Russian refineries for driving up global diesel prices. Conversely, President Zelenskyy condemned the agreement as an 'unfair gift to Putin' that provides Moscow with funds to finance its military operations. He noted that Russia often responds to diplomatic shifts with increased military aggression, citing recent strikes in Zaporizhzhia that killed at least 20 people.
