Mykhailo Fedorov calls for wartime elections in Ukraine

Former Ukrainian Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has sparked significant political debate by calling for presidential and parliamentary elections to be held during the ongoing war. Fedorov argues that Ukraine faces a systemic governance crisis fueled by corruption and that democratic processes must be restored to maintain legitimacy.

His proposal has met with widespread skepticism within Ukraine. Protest organizers, including military veteran Dmytro Koziatynskyj, have distanced themselves from the call, stating that elections should not occur until the war is over or the front lines are stabilized. Critics also note that current martial law legally prohibits such elections.

In response to the debate, the European Union has maintained a neutral stance. EU spokesperson Anitta Hipper stated that the decision regarding the timing of elections rests solely with Ukraine, though the EU remains ready to support the process and ensure democratic standards are met.

Amidst this political tension, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed Yevhenii Khmara as the permanent Minister of Defence. Meanwhile, polling by SOCIS indicates that while Zelenskyy holds 22 percent support, former commander Valerii Zaluzhnyi follows at 21 percent, and Fedorov stands at 13 percent.
