German Prosecutors Charge Ukrainian ex‑SBU officer Sergei Kuznetsov in Nord Stream sabotage

German prosecutors have formally charged Sergei Kuznetsov, a former officer of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), accusing him of taking part in the September 26‑2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines. Kuznetsov was arrested in Italy, extradited to Germany and allegedly admitted in a monitored phone call with his wife that he was acting under command of the Ukrainian intelligence network and felt abandoned by Kyiv and President Zelensky. According to the indictment, Kuznetsov and six other Ukrainian nationals rented the yacht Andromeda, from which divers placed explosives on the pipelines in the Baltic Sea near the Danish island of Bornholm. German investigators cite intercepted communications and mobile‑phone data linking him to the operation and to a commander identified as “Roman” (likely intelligence officer Roman Chervinsky). Ukrainian officials have repeatedly denied any state involvement, while the investigation fuels debate over possible Ukrainian responsibility versus alternative theories. The case adds to a series of European probes into the Nord Stream attacks, which have strained relations between Germany, Ukraine and other NATO members.
