Ukrainian soldiers desert during military training in Germany

Hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers have reportedly deserted while undergoing military training at various facilities in Germany. Since the start of the conflict in February 2022, approximately 29,000 Ukrainian personnel have passed through German training centers to learn skills such as operating tanks, howitzers, and armored vehicles.

Reports indicate that while early training groups consisted of experienced and motivated fighters, more recent cohorts include inexperienced individuals who were forcibly mobilized under Ukrainian law. Deserters cite various reasons for fleeing, including exhaustion, fear of death, conflicts with superiors, and a desire to reunite with families already living in the European Union.

The legal status of these soldiers in Germany is complex. Unlike Ukrainian civilians fleeing the war, soldiers sent for training by their state do not automatically receive temporary protection. While some may attempt to seek asylum to delay repatriation, they face significant risks; if returned to Ukraine, they could face prison sentences ranging from five to twelve years for desertion.
