Ukrainian steel industry faces new EU trade restrictions and Russian attacks
Ukraine’s steel industry, a critical economic pillar accounting for 15% of the nation's total exports, is facing severe existential threats from both Russian military action and new European Union trade regulations.
Zaporizhstal, a major steel producer, continues to operate despite frequent drone and missile attacks. However, new EU regulations effective July 1 have significantly altered the trade landscape. The EU has nearly halved annual tax-free import quotas for Ukrainian steel, while imposing a 50% tax on goods exceeding these limits. Oleksandr Myronenko, CEO of Metinvest Group, noted that the industry is shifting from receiving EU support to facing new restrictions.
These trade barriers coincide with logistical challenges, including the closure of Black Sea shipping routes and rising domestic rail costs. The industry's stability is further compromised by ongoing conflict; a recent strike on the Zaporizhstal plant resulted in seven worker fatalities and a temporary facility shutdown.
