Volodymyr Zhuravlyov arrested in Croatia over Nord Stream sabotage

Volodymyr Zhuravlyov, a Ukrainian national and professional diver, has been arrested in Pula, Croatia, under a European arrest warrant issued by Germany. Zhuravlyov is suspected of participating in the 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea.

According to media reports, the arrest occurred while Zhuravlyov was working as an advisor on the set of the Hollywood film ‘Snake Island’, directed by Doug Liman. A Croatian court has ordered his pretrial detention due to flight risk while awaiting extradition to Germany, where prosecutors allege he was part of a group that planted explosives on the infrastructure.

German investigators believe the attack may have been ordered by a Ukrainian state agency to disrupt Russian energy revenues. This follows the previous arrest and extradition of Sergiy Kuznetsov, a former Ukrainian military officer, to Germany.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has denied any government involvement in the pipeline destruction. Meanwhile, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has expressed support for the view that the Nord Stream project itself was a mistake, stating that those who built the pipelines should feel shame rather than those who disabled them.
