Ukrainian troops' coffee‑break training in Sweden shocks NATO

During NATO’s Aurora 26 exercise in Kungsängen, Sweden, Ukrainian front‑line soldiers acted as the simulated enemy. The training featured frequent coffee‑breaks, called “fika,” and strict rules on where drones could be used. Ukrainian operators from the Lubart brigade employed reconnaissance and attack drones to quickly neutralise tanks and other western units, demonstrating a speed of technological adaptation that surprised NATO participants.

More than 18,000 troops from 13 countries took part. Ukrainian commander Vadym Krykun warned that, in its current state, western forces would have limited chances on a modern battlefield. The performance has spurred German pressure to accelerate Bundeswehr reforms and procurement cycles, highlighting the need for faster innovation in NATO’s defence capabilities.
