UK's Brexit Decade: Economic and Political Fallout After 10 Years

On 23 June 2016, 51.9% of British voters chose to leave the European Union, initiating the Brexit process. The United Kingdom formally exited the EU on 31 January 2020 and left the single market on 1 January 2021.

A joint report by Poland's Sobieski Institute and Deloitte, titled “Shrunken Power – Ten Years After the Brexit Referendum: Economic, Political and Social Assessment of the United Kingdom”, analyses the past decade. The study finds a negative economic balance: UK GDP per‑capita fell by 6‑8%, private‑sector investment dropped 12‑18%, employment fell 3‑4%, and productivity declined similarly. Public‑finance revenues were reduced by £75‑100 billion a year. Politically, Brexit did not trigger a collapse of the British state, but it weakened the UK’s growth trajectory and reduced its influence within the European economic system, shifting the country from a major bloc player to a medium‑sized power operating independently.
