Ulanqab transforms from agricultural hub to green computing center
Ulanqab, a city in China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, is transitioning from an agricultural hub known as the ‘potato capital’ to a center for green computing and artificial intelligence. By leveraging abundant wind and solar resources, the city is supporting the growth of its computing industry as part of the national ‘East Data, West Computing’ project.
As of August 2026, Ulanqab had signed 109 computing center projects. The industry generated approximately 5.68 billion yuan (about $849 million) in revenue between January and August, representing a 40.3% year-on-year increase. The city’s development strategy aims to establish it as a ‘token city’ powered by clean energy.
During a recent visit to the Chahar High-Tech Development Zone, President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of utilizing the region’s renewable resources to develop the green computing power industry. He stressed the necessity of balancing high-quality technological development with high-level environmental protection and ecological conservation.
