ULB joins European RESISTANCE project to study authoritarianism

The Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) is participating in the RESISTANCE project, a three-year European initiative launched in September 2026 to study the spread of authoritarianism and strengthen democratic resistance.

Coordinated by the University of Birmingham and funded by Horizon Europe, the project aims to analyze how authoritarian ideas, digital technologies, and policies circulate through local, national, and transnational networks. Researcher Luca Tomini will utilize political science and human geography methods, including field research and network analysis, to study locations such as Istanbul, Belgrade, Accra, and Grünheide.

The research intends to produce practical tools for public authorities, journalists, and civil society, including an authoritarian risk observatory with an early warning system and an interactive guide for resistance tactics.
