Ulcinj and Bar: Historical and cultural connections

The coastal cities of Ulcinj and Bar share a deep historical and geographical connection shaped by their position within the Mediterranean. Throughout history, these cities have functioned as interconnected systems, navigating shifts between Eastern and Western powers.

Ulcinj has held various significant statuses, including a privileged Roman city, a major port in the Byzantine province of Dalmatia, a free port under the Nemanjić dynasty, and a small city-republic during the Ottoman era. It also served as a residence for the rulers of Zeta and was a key city in Venetian Albania.

Bar served as the spiritual and political center of Duklja. Like Ulcinj, it maintained distinct civic identities, including its own coinage, coats of arms, and systems of local democracy. In 1575, Sultan Murad III confirmed the city's existing privileges through an Ahdname.
