Ulf Kristersson outlines potential government formation path in Sweden
Following the election results, Swedish Moderate Party leader Ulf Kristersson has indicated that if Social Democrat leader Magdalena Andersson fails to form a government, he would be willing to attempt to form one with five parties focused on a shared economic policy.
Kristersson noted that the previous Tidö agreement was a project for the prior mandate period and stated that he currently lacks the parliamentary majority required to continue that specific blue-yellow coalition. He suggested that a non-socialist majority could be viable if the Center Party eases its opposition to cooperation with the Sweden Democratic Party (SD) and if SD is willing to support a government from the sidelines.
Observers note that the political landscape is complicated by rigid negotiating positions, or “red lines,” among the various parties. While the previous administration utilized a model of compromise, current negotiations between the red-green bloc are reportedly hindered by ultimatums regarding both policy and inter-party relationships, making a stable government formation difficult.
