Uli Hoeneß honored with Legenden-Award at Sport Bild ceremony
Uli Hoeneß, honorary president of FC Bayern München, was honored with the Legenden-Award for his life's work at the 24th annual Sport Bild Awards in Hamburg. During the ceremony, Hoeneß shared several emotional reflections, including a memory from 2014 when he was serving a prison sentence for tax evasion. He recalled being moved to tears by a televised message from Bastian Schweinsteiger following Germany's World Cup victory in Brazil, where Schweinsteiger expressed gratitude to him.
Hoeneß also used the platform to critique the current state of German football, describing the national team's recent World Cup performance as a “Betriebsausflug” (business trip) and calling for greater discipline and hard work. He expressed confidence in new national coach Jürgen Klopp to restore rigor. Additionally, former player Thomas Helmer shared an anecdote about a past heated confrontation with Hoeneß during a Champions League match, noting that despite their intense professional tensions, they have since developed a relationship of mutual respect.
Other winners at the gala included Alexander Zverev as Star of the Year, Harry Kane as Football Star of the Year, and Schalke 04 as Team of the Year.
