AfD leads polls ahead of Saxony-Anhalt regional elections

As the September 6 regional elections in Saxony-Anhalt approach, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) is leading in multiple polls, with support ranging between 40 and 42 percent. This surge places the party significantly ahead of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which is polling at approximately 22 to 23 percent.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz has warned of severe economic consequences if the AfD achieves an absolute majority, suggesting that international investors might reconsider their involvement in the state. Meanwhile, CDU candidate and Minister President Sven Schulze is campaigning to prevent an AfD absolute majority, emphasizing his intent to defeat the party through elections rather than a ban.

Legal experts have raised concerns regarding the AfD's proposal to establish a voluntary 'Bürgerwacht' (citizen guard) as a third pillar of security, calling it constitutionally problematic. Former Chancellor Angela Merkel has also called for a strong defense of democratic values in response to the party's rise.
