ULS do Algarve denies banning employees from medical studies

The Algarve Local Health Unit (ULS do Algarve) has denied allegations that it prohibited employees from maintaining their jobs while studying medicine at the University of Algarve. The clarification follows questioning from the Socialist Party (PS) regarding statements made by the ULS Board President, Tiago Botelho, who suggested that medical studies might be incompatible with regular professional duties due to the high level of dedication required.

The ULS stated that its comments were “unduly interpreted and taken out of context,” asserting that no formal decision or internal policy exists to mandate the termination of employment for those enrolled in the medical course.

In response to the controversy, PSD deputy Cristóvão Norte stated that the rights of worker-students will be “scrupulously respected.” Norte advocated for stronger support mechanisms to retain healthcare professionals in the region, suggesting the implementation of scholarships for ULS employees who commit to remaining with the institution as doctors for a set period after completing their studies.
