ULS Lezíria implements pioneering pediatric Type 1 diabetes screening
The Unidade Local de Saúde (ULS) da Lezíria is gaining recognition for its pioneering work in the early detection of pediatric Type 1 diabetes. The institution's structured screening process, established in November 2025, involves collaboration between pediatrics, clinical pathology, and primary healthcare services. This project targets children and adolescents with a first-degree relative suffering from Type 1 diabetes.
Pediatrician Filipa Vilarinho, coordinator of the Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion (CSII) Treatment Center at ULS Lezíria, noted that early identification can prevent severe disease presentations and allow for better family preparation and potential disease-modifying pharmacological therapies. The project was recently presented at the ‘Dimensão Beta’ meeting in Aveiro.
Additionally, ULS Lezíria participated in the 1st National Meeting of Diabetes Nurses in Monte Real. Nurse Sandra Santos Paulino, from the institution's CSII Treatment Center, was part of the organizing team. The meeting focused on the role of nurse educators and the integration of new technologies in diabetes management.
