Ulsan Mayor Kim Sang-wook Confirms Tram Project Will Proceed

Ulsan Mayor Kim Sang-wook chaired a meeting on March 31 with senior city officials and representatives from the civic group Ulsan Citizens’ Alliance to decide the fate of the Ulsan City Rail Line 1 (tram) construction. Citing legal advice that the city cannot lawfully terminate the contract, the mayor announced that the project will continue.

The project, contracted to a consortium led by Hansung Engineering and built in partnership with Hyundai Rotem for hydrogen‑electric trams, involves a 10.85 km line from Taehwagang Station to Sinbok Intersection with 15 stations. The 381.4 billion‑won investment is slated for completion and opening in 2029, with detailed design work expected to conclude by March 2025.
