Ulsan seeks legal basis for joint campuses in Urban Convergence Special Zones

Ulsan Metropolitan City and local lawmakers are seeking to amend the ‘Special Act on the Creation and Fostering of Urban Convergence Special Zones’ to provide a legal basis for establishing joint campuses. During a discussion held at the National Assembly in Seoul on the 24th, participants addressed the need to prevent the outflow of young talent to the capital region by creating a virtuous cycle of education, research, employment, and settlement.

The proposed amendment, originally introduced by Representative Yun Jong-oh in April, aims to allow universities, foreign educational institutions, and research institutes to establish and operate within these special zones. It also seeks to include provisions for supporting establishment and operation costs, such as land acquisition and facility construction.

Ulsan plans to utilize these joint campuses to attract departments related to regional strategic industries, enhancing industry-academic-research cooperation and diversifying the influx of the youth population into the region.
