Ulss 9 reports 74 placenta donations in first year
The regional health authority Ulss 9 announced that its "Donate the Placenta" programme collected 74 placental tissue donations during its first year of operation (1 July 2025 – 30 June 2026). The donations came from three birth points: 14 at the San Bonifacio hospital, 22 at Legnago and 38 at Villafranca.
The collected placenta, especially the amniotic membrane, is being stored for use in regenerative and reconstructive medicine, treating severe corneal injuries, burns and other complex lesions. Director of the Maternal‑Infant Department Mauro Cinquetti highlighted that the donation is voluntary, risk‑free for mother and newborn, and can significantly improve patient outcomes. Federico Girardini, coordinator of the transplant unit, thanked the medical staff and the new mothers for their cooperation and expressed confidence that the programme will continue to grow.
The initiative demonstrates increasing awareness among new mothers about the therapeutic potential of placental tissue and aims to expand the network of participating hospitals in the coming years.
