Ultra-Orthodox recruits join IDF amid protests at Tel Hashomer

Approximately 500 ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) recruits arrived at the Tel Hashomer IDF recruitment center to begin enlistment, marking a significant moment in the ongoing debate regarding military service exemptions. About 60% of these new recruits are slated for combat roles within specialized units, including the Netzah Yehuda Battalion, the Hasmonean Brigade, and the Hetz Company. These units are designed to allow soldiers to maintain strict religious observance while serving.

The recruitment process has faced intense opposition from radical ultra-Orthodox protesters. On Monday, demonstrators attempted to block access roads leading to the base, resulting in clashes with security personnel and causing traffic disruptions in Kiryat Ono. Some protesters reportedly slept outside the facility to obstruct the start of the draft cycle.

Despite the protests, organizations such as Shomer Yisrael expressed satisfaction with the turnout. Lt. Col. (res.) Yossi Levi, CEO of Shomer Yisrael, stated that the arrival of these recruits demonstrates the possibility of combining a Torah-based identity with direct contributions to national security. The current enlistment wave is expected to continue for two weeks.
