Ultra-processed foods linked to addictive behaviors

Ultra-processed foods, such as sodas, chips, and sugary cereals, are designed to be highly palatable by combining high levels of sugar, salt, and fats with textures that encourage rapid consumption. According to the NOVA classification, these industrial products often contain ingredients not typically used in home cooking, including emulsifiers, flavorings, colorants, and sweeteners.

Consuming these foods stimulates the brain's reward system, triggering the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and motivation. Frequent consumption of foods high in sugar and fat can lead to cravings and a desire to repeat the behavior.

A 2023 international study indicated that approximately 14% of adults and 12% of children exhibit behaviors consistent with addiction to ultra-processed foods, including loss of control, uncontrollable cravings, and difficulty reducing consumption despite negative consequences.
