Ultra-processed foods linked to hypertension and increased mortality risks
Recent research and medical analysis highlight the significant health risks associated with ultra-processed foods (UPF), specifically regarding hypertension and mortality. A study by researchers at Justus Liebig University Giessen, tracking approximately 100,000 participants from the UK Biobank over ten years, found that additives such as flavorings, colorants, sweeteners, and various sugars are linked to an increased risk of hypertension. Specifically, artificial sweeteners like acesulfame potassium and aspartame, along with fructose, were associated with higher risks.
Medical experts further distinguish between general processed foods and ultra-processed foods using the NOVA classification system. While general processed foods (such as canned vegetables or natural cheeses) are often safe, ultra-processed foods contain industrial ingredients not typically found in home kitchens, such as emulsifiers, high-fructose corn syrup, and hydrogenated oils.
A large-scale review published in the BMJ involving nearly 9.9 million people indicates that high consumption of UPFs is linked to a 21% increase in all-cause mortality and a 50% increase in cardiovascular disease mortality risk. These foods may trigger health issues by causing rapid blood sugar fluctuations, disrupting gut microbiota through emulsifiers, and suppressing satiety signals, leading to overconsumption.
