Ultrafine Particle Pollution Responsible for About 2 Million Deaths Worldwide, Study Shows

A research team led by Jos Lelieveld and Andrei Pozzer at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry has identified ultrafine particles (UFP) – particles smaller than 100 nanometres – as a major, previously under‑recognised health risk. Because UFP are not covered by standard air‑quality metrics, they can readily pass deep into the lungs, enter the bloodstream and reach organs such as the heart and brain. By combining satellite data, emission inventories and machine‑learning models, the scientists created a 1‑km resolution global map of UFP concentrations, finding typical city levels of 10‑30 thousand particles per cm³ and up to 40 thousand in the most polluted areas. A meta‑analysis of four large cohort studies from the United States, Canada and the Netherlands, involving over 13 million people, estimated that each increase of 10 000 particles/cm³ raises all‑cause mortality risk by about 5.7%. Applying this risk factor to the exposure map suggests roughly 200 000 premature deaths annually in Europe, about 100 000 in North America and around 2 million worldwide – roughly 5 % of all non‑communicable disease deaths.

In a separate Polish study, Łukasz Adamkiewicz of the European Centre for Clean Air calculated that more than 500 residents of Wrocław die prematurely each year because of traffic‑related nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) exposure. This figure is over twice earlier estimates and indicates that NO₂ from vehicle emissions contributes 2.5‑fold more to mortality than previously thought. NO₂ irritates airways and raises the risk of cardiovascular and respiratory illnesses. The research underscores the urgent need for stricter emission controls ahead of the European Union air‑quality standards set to take effect in 2030.
