Ultraviolet radiation enhances water disinfection efficiency

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is increasingly being utilized as a complementary or alternative method to chlorine for water disinfection. Using UV-C radiation in the germicidal range of 200 to 280 nm, the process damages the genetic material of microorganisms, preventing reproduction without altering the water's chemical composition.

Research indicates that UV technology can destroy more than 99.99% of pathogens, including chlorine-resistant protozoa such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia. In Brazil, the Ministry of Health has established specific parameters for this technique, including a minimum dose of 2.1 mJ/cm² for the inactivation of Giardia cysts.

To optimize effectiveness, experts suggest placing UV disinfection before chlorine injection. This sequence leverages UV's ability to damage microbial DNA, making organisms more susceptible to chlorine while reducing the formation of harmful disinfection byproducts. This approach is particularly valuable for industries requiring rigorous microbiological control, such as the pharmaceutical and food sectors.
