Donald Trump Jr. wedding funding by Russian oligarch under investigation

Umar Kremlev, a Russian oligarch with close ties to President Vladimir Putin, reportedly funded a lavish multi-day wedding celebration for Donald Trump Jr. in the Bahamas this past May.

Investigations by ProPublica and subsequent congressional scrutiny have revealed that Kremlev, who serves as the president of the International Boxing Association, covered hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses. These costs included the rental of private islands for guest accommodations and receptions, as well as a large-scale fireworks display. The payments were reportedly facilitated through an entity in Dubai affiliated with the boxing association.

Democratic lawmakers have launched inquiries into the matter. Representative Robert Garcia of the House Oversight Committee is investigating potential links between the Kremlin and the White House, seeking records of communications between Trump Jr. and Kremlev. Additionally, Representative Jim Himes of the House Intelligence Committee has called on the FBI to investigate whether the financial arrangement poses a counterintelligence risk to the United States.

Donald Trump Jr. has not disputed the payments but characterized Kremlev as a “personal friend” rather than a business associate, describing the funding as an “extraordinarily generous wedding gift.”
